Key extracts from the blog written by Regional Hub member Donna Briscoe - Green on her recent visit to Grahamstown Festival.

Donna Briscoe - Greene

Just arriving in Grahams town filled me with so much excitement that the grueling journey here just disappeared. The selection of shows I wanted to experience was 1 from all styles of performance genre.

Imbokotho – Bongane Ntshingila :‘Post modern’ Physical Theatre
This also represented the Wow factor, performed by 2 young men, this was a strong, very physically creative short, that focussed on social issues such as child abuse, crime and women. Very thought provoking.

The Olive Tree – Ntshieng Mokgoro : Drama
This performance set was beautiful and the imagery astounding. The piece was packed with female ritual and rich with spirituality, poetry, imagery and song. The character’s journeys’ seemed full of endless suffering, very moved.

Steel Drums and Bass : Musical dance performance
A small dance group in a Church could not be that good – preconceptions would have robbed me from this vibrant entertainment. The historical gum boot dance mixed with the sound of the steel drum; fantastic, really enjoyable to see and hear.

Original Skin – Phillippa Yaa De Villiers : Autobiographical
...this was a real thought provoking story line, about the adoption of the mixed race girl whose parents had lied to her about her identity. Very well written, and beautifully staged.
