A project recording British Alternative Theatre, 1968 -88, through interviews and the collecting of archive material.
Companies involved were among some of the first Black, Asian, lesbian, gay, women’s, disabled, political, experimental, TIE and community-based theatre groups seen in Britain. Work ranged from experiments in physical and visual theatre or performance art, to vernacular drama, agit-prop and satire, championing a generation of artists whose work has influenced and shaped present day theatre..
From 1953 to1998 when it closed its film department, Arts Council England commissioned or participated in the production of 450 documentary films, which recorded all aspects of art. The films cover all the art forms and explore race, gender and post-colonialism, among them: 'Hidden Heritage: Black American Painting', `Frantz Fanon –Black Skin, White Mask', a film about the Gujurati painter Bhupen Khakhar, the films of the Black Arts Video Project, the first all black dance company in London (1946), African, Irish, Indian and West Indian musicians in the UK, British architecture in India. Along with profiles on Frida Kahlo, Lynton Kwesi Johnson and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

The Live Art Development Agency and the British Library are pleased to announce the launch of the Live Art Collection as part of the UK Web Archive. The Live Art Collection was initiated in late 2008 and is maintained by the British Library in collaboration with the Live Art Development Agency, London. The Live Art Collection is part of the UK Web Archive which is a corpus of websites selected by leading UK institutions for their historical, social and cultural significance in the UK, for the benefit of researchers. The archive is free to view and has already collected over 4,000 selected websites since it was set up in mid-2005.
